Medical education in Georgia is standard across the state. Each program has a four-year clinical program with a three-year residency before being allowed to practice medicine as a competent professional. There are only three major medical schools in Georgia. Two are private and one is the state’s flagship medical college.
Ranking at the top of medical schools each year, Emory’s School of Medicine at Emory University is one of the best in the country. Located in the Decatur neighborhood of the Atlanta area, Emory boasts some of the best medical research, physicians and hospitals in the country. Emory’s medical school and university are private institutions.
Located a bit south of Emory and Atlanta, Mercer University in Macon also has a School of Medicine. The Mercer Medical School boasts a program similar to Emory and has several affiliated medical facilities and operations for student s and patients. Also private, Mercer Medical is normally a top training school.
The last medical school in Georgia is located in Augusta, Georgia and is the state’s public medical school. Georgia Health Sciences University is the 13th medical school in the country and the oldest medical school in Georgia. Closely affiliated with the flagship universities of the state, Georgia Health Sciences University has produced many outstanding physicians in its storied history.
